The Northwater - Ian McGuire
The Northwater - Ian McGuire
A 19th-century whaling voyage heads into Arctic ice with a crew of men already half-lost to themselves. Among them is a disgraced surgeon running from his past, and a harpooner who seems to belong more to the animal world than the human one. As the ship pushes north, the cold strips everything back and things turn ugly fast.
This is brutal, physical and almost biblical in its starkness. The prose feels carved rather than written. There is violence and bleakness, but also something hypnotic in its honesty about what men become when survival is all that remains.
If you can tolerate darkness then the payoff is atmosphere so thick you can taste the salt and blood in the air.
