Small Things Like These - Claire Keegan
Small Things Like These - Claire Keegan
Set in a small Irish town in the weeks leading up to Christmas, it follows coal merchant Bill Furlong as he goes about his deliveries and begins to notice something he cannot unsee. Barely over 100 pages but the moral weight it carries is enormous.
Keegan writes with extraordinary restraint. The sentences are clean, almost simple, but what’s left unsaid hums underneath. There’s no melodrama. No heavy moralising. Just one decent man confronted with the cost of doing the right thing.
Slim enough to read in an evening, but the kind of book that sits with you long after especially if you appreciate precise, elegant prose and stories that trust the reader.
