Harlem Shuffle - Colson Whitehead
Harlem Shuffle - Colson Whitehead
1960's Harlem; we follow a furniture salesman who longs for a respectable life and keeps finding himself pulled back in to the orbit of hustlers, schemers and small moral compromises.
The way that Whitehead paints a picture of Harlem from the streets, shops, clubs and social codes of the time is remarkable and then layered over the top is his signature dry wit.
This is such a good and (surprisingly) easy read...The right amount of funny while still managing to tackle class, ambition and respectability.
